Kanen

Song

As part of Indigenous Awareness Week.

Named Révélation Radio-Canada 2022-2023, nominated for Folk Artist and Emerging Artist at the 2022 Teweikan Gala and for Indigenous Artist of the Year at the 2021 ADISQ Gala, Kanen is a singer-songwriter from the Innu community of Uashat mak Mani-Utenam on the North Shore and a rising star in Quebec’s contemporary musical landscape. She is a member of the Nikamu Mamuitun collective and has been performing in Quebec since the release of her first EP in 2019, where she unveils her sensitive, introspective and soft indie-folk universe. Her songs blend French and Innu-aimun, a language she is learning to master in a process of reclaiming her identity. A favorite of the public and the jury, she won a dozen prizes in the semi-finals of the 24th edition of the Francouvertes. In April 2023, she will release her long-awaited first album with a new show in which she presents herself fully incarnated in all her complexity, a more raw musicality, her punk energy marked by a great poetry that brings strong emotions to life. This fall, she offers us two first singles: Nimueshtaten nete (I miss it there) where Kanen and Louis-Jean Cormier unite their voices to offer us a magnificent ode to the territory and to their home, the North Shore. Then Fuck That Shit, an eclectic piece that plunges us into an indie-rock vibe, tinged with grunge, in which the artist reveals a very contagious need to have fun.

A discussion will be offered after the show.
